OU Lunch Speaker Works to “Connect Us All”

Last fall, Ted Elmore, president of BridgePark Foundation, came to Open University and gave a Lunch Speaker presentation, Reimagining Richmond: Parks as Bridges, where he talked with us about BridgePark, an exciting project happening here in the RVA community.

For a quick refresher, BridgePark proposes repurposing portions of the Manchester Bridge (9th Street) into a park with active green spaces, tree-lined walking paths, and a bicycle superhighway. The project will tie many east-west urban initiatives together via interconnected parks, event spaces and public art opportunities along an important north-south spine and seek to prompt further complementary development and connectivity beyond the boundaries of the project. At its widest-scale, BridgePark aims to reconnect communities that were separated from the city’s center by a series of mid-century infrastructure projects.

Doesn’t that sound wonderful? But wait! This only gets better! Since you are an “in-the-know” OU student as well as a senior in the RVA community, you are uniquely qualified to share your knowledge and give input on this exciting project! Ted Elmore’s team is conducting a study of how BridgePark might best serve seniors. If you are interested in helping, please drop him an email at ted@bridgeparkrva.com. To learn more about the project visit BridgeParkRVA.

Changes to Open University Schedule

There are a few Open University schedule changes to announce before the start of the fall session. For the Lunch Speakers: on Monday, September 21, Dan Palazzolo will present The 2020 Elections while Ernest McGowen’s presentation, The Changing Political Landscape, moves to Thursday, September 24, replacing Charles Williams’s Diversity versus Inclusivity.
In addition, we regret to announce the cancellation of the course Yoga Calm for Your Day.
We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may bring to your own schedules and hope you can join us for ALL of the wonderful courses, lectures and lunch speakers given by instructors graciously “Zooming” their time and talents with TSCOR! As well, we appreciate your patience while we all work towards finding our footing in this brave new online world.

Look Forward to Fall: Lifelong Learning with The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond

The official start date of autumn is a couple weeks away, but with Labor Day behind us, our attention turns to fall activities we love. What better activities to look forward to than the lifelong learning programs of TSCOR?

Open University is entirely online via Zoom this fall. Sign up for great classes and a chance to virtually wave at your fellow students and favorite teachers. Wednesday’s Lunch & Life – always free, open to the public, and normally presented in partnership with St. Mary Catholic Church – has also moved online for the fall 2020 session.

While “spring forward, fall back,” works wonderfully as a clock-setting mnemonic, it does not necessarily apply to life. Don’t fall back and look behind to what was missed; look forward to fall with TSCOR! Register today! And share this info with friends and family – let’s look forward to fall together.

There is also a change to the Open University schedule. We regretfully announce that Genealogy will not be offered this fall.

The Open University Online Fall 2020 Schedule is HERE!

Finally some good news and an event to look forward to – the fall 2020 Open University schedule is here! Due to the pandemic, the decision was made to move OU entirely online via Zoom. Not an easy decision or an easy task, but with the help of a dedicated education committee, wonderful volunteer instructors, and a determined lifelong learning coordinator, we have exactly what we’ve been waiting for. Thank you, everyone!

There are some changes for this session. No in-person activities are scheduled; offerings are held online via Zoom on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; Lunch & Life is still free and open to the public, but you must register to receive the Zoom links. No internet? No problem! You can use Zoom on your phone! And please register early: payment needs to be received the Wednesday before classes and speakers are scheduled; emails with Zoom class links will be sent out every Sunday evening.

We invite you to share the OU schedule with friends, family, neighbors, and anyone else you know who might need some connection and activity in their life right now. We can also take this opportunity to reach out to those who may have not had access to OU before. After all, the more the merrier! And aren’t we all due for a little more merriment?

Are you ready? See the fall 2020 schedule here. Register and pay online here.

Open University. The door to learning is always OPEN.

The Shepherd’s Center of Richmond Begins New Membership Year

Friends of TSCOR,                                                                   July 1, 2020

I hope everyone is doing well during this unprecedented time in our nation’s history. With everything we are seeing in the world today, TSCOR, more than ever, wants to demonstrate its commitment to older adults in our community. Creating and maintaining programs and services that offer lifestyle enrichment to our members is our top priority and we hope you will join us.

Membership runs from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Becoming a member means you contribute to the continuation of a wonderful organization that supports the well-being of older adults. During this pandemic, organizational survival has become paramount. There are countless small businesses and non-profits in jeopardy. TSCOR has been lucky so far and believes that we will come out okay on the other side, but that will be easier with you as a supporting member.

Membership is only $25.00 – I bet you saved that much in gas these past four months!  And there are benefits too, but the most important one is your belief in the benefits TSCOR brings to older adults. Your support is especially important now, so please renew, or begin, your membership today.

Annual Membership Is Only $25

Benefits of membership:

  • Free admittance to all Open University lunch speakers
  • Reduced Open University tuition
  • Reduced travel rates on TSCOR trips
  • Receive the TSCOR newsletter, Gray Matters
  • Invitation to the Annual Volunteer Celebration

What You Give:

  • Support to our service programs: we provide seniors with free rides to medical appointments and grocery stores, as well as Handyman help and Friendly Callers
  • Support to our lifelong learning programs Open University and Lunch & Life

What You Do:

  • Improve and enrich the lives of older adults by supporting TSCOR’S mission: Encouraging older adults to remain active and independent through enrichment programs and volunteer service to their peers.

We use this time of year to encourage membership so that in the fall, when the Open University begins, everyone will be ready to enjoy its benefits. You are more than welcome to wait and include your membership with your tuition payment if you prefer. You can pay online here. And finally, I encourage everyone to subscribe to our website to receive the course schedule via email in August, as well as information you’ll want to know throughout the year.

Thank you,

Julie Adams-Buchanan, Executive Director
